Gifting the scent of Christmas!

By Sabrina @pinklilnotebook · On November 17, 2016

It’s the holiday season, you’re invited to a dinner party and you’re stressing about what to get the hostess. You feel like you’ve done it all—wine, flowers, baked goods and you’re running out of new ideas that you haven’t already used a million times before.

Relax. Here’s a gift idea that could work for almost anyone. Showing your appreciation with a one-of-a-kind gift is just the way to make a favourable impression this holiday season.

Gift the scent of Christmas! Create your very own stove-top simmer (potpourri) that will fill your hostess’ house with the most delicious scent ever. It’s extremely easy to make and you can pair it with everyday kitchen essentials.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 sprigs of fresh pine
  • 3 sticks of cinnamon
  • 1 mandarin sliced
  • 1 cup of fresh cranberries
  • 2 tbs of whole cloves
  • mason jar
  • small pot
  • kitchen towels

STEP ONE:  Begin by arranging the pine, cinnamon, mandarin, cranberries and cloves into the mason jar.

Side note – if you want to make a bunch of these stove-top simmers in advance. I recommend drying out the fruit to prolong the life. You can either use a fruit dehydrator or bake in the oven for 2 hours at 200°F.

STEP TWO: Create a label. You can either print one or handwrite a customized label which should indicate the following: “To fill your home with a delicious holiday scent, place all the contents of this jar into the provided pot.  Fill with water and simmer over low heat, uncovered.”  Use ribbon or twine to attach label to the jar.

STEP THREE: Put it all together! Place half of the kitchen towel inside the pot with the other half slightly hanging out. Arrange the mason jar on top with the pot lid. Fill in any empty gaps with left over pine and cinnamon sticks.

There you have it, a unique but very practical hostess gift!
