REVEAL ORC Week 6: Combined Living + Dining Makeover

By Sabrina @pinklilnotebook · On May 7, 2015

week 1 ⎸week 2  ⎸week 3 ⎸week 4 ⎸week 5

The final week of One Room Challenge™ is always a favourite of mine. I love seeing all the transformations that take place over the course of six weeks.  Between the 20 main participants picked by Linda of Calling it Home and all the 100+ linking participants that join in on all the fun—there’s so much to see!

As many of you know, we’ve been extremely busy at The Mod House Project since moving in.  We are tackling room after room to ultimately finish our main floor (and eventually the entire house).

We joined the ORC with the primary goal to update our combined living and dining room area. And that we did!

LivingDiningBefore+after_PLN

It all began with this very dated space.  When we purchased our home last October, the set up had my husband ready to run out of the house. He couldn’t see past the old furniture, the ugly carpet, beige walls and off-centre light fixture.

I, on the other hand, saw potential!

DiningBefore_MLS_PLN

It’s definitely come a long way.  We totally transformed this combined living space to reflect both our style and needs. With new floors, some paint, a few added accessories and a DIY built-in, we are jumping with joy at the end result!

LivingDiningReveal9_PLN

LivingDiningReveal20_PLN

As mentioned in week 1, we did our major construction work prior to the ORC. This included:

  • Knocking down part of the wall between our kitchen and dining room.
  • Ripping out all the carpet and replacing with hardwood floors.

DiningBefore_PLN2

LivingDiningReveal4_PLN

It was a lot of fun combining our old furniture pieces with some new ones in the room. The dining room table is an investment piece we purchased while living in our previous home, which I still adore to this day.

LivingDiningReveal8_PLN

LivingDiningReveal10_PLN

A graphic area rug was added to define the space, drapes to soften the look of the room and a fun modern brass chandelier to fill the air space above our table.

LivingDiningReveal11_PLN

The living room is by far home to one of my favourite DIY’s: the built-in bookcases.

LivingDiningReveal2_PLN

LivingDiningBefore_PLN

This is one of the first sights upon entering our home. This once overlooked empty room certainly gets all the attention now.

LivingDiningReveal_PLN

I originally purchase a secondhand buffet server for this space which didn’t work out as planned. It was substituted last minute for this open side table.

Amazing, amazing, amazing!!!!!!!!!!! I love the details you’ve thought about and how the side table in the living room perfectly nods to the dining room table without being obviously part of a set. You really accomplished SO much in 6 weeks!

Thanks so much Thalita! You’re the best 🙂 I really had a freak attack about not being able to use our buffet server but in the end, the side table was the better choice!

Sabrina, what a stunning transformation! I mean y’all had your work cut out for only 6 weeks! You’re combined new space looks like it came straight from a magazine but with your style! All the things you did like ripping out the beige carpet, painting the walls grey, taking out a wall, are things I’ve wanted to do since day one living in our home, now going on 2 years. 🙂 Hard to have a favorite when you’re new build in shelves, those blue sleek chairs, and your eating space! Cheers on a job well done and space you can finally enjoy! XOXO, Sarah

Hi Sabina! We knew for sure that it wasn’t a load bearing wall. Our basement is unfinished which makes it easy for us to recognize where the beams are placed plus we have some handymen in the family that we turn to for advice! We would never ever touch a wall without knowing for sure:) Thanks so much for the kind comments:)
