week 1 ⎸week 2 ⎸week 3 ⎸week 4 ⎸week 5
The final week of One Room Challenge™ is always a favourite of mine. I love seeing all the transformations that take place over the course of six weeks. Between the 20 main participants picked by Linda of Calling it Home and all the 100+ linking participants that join in on all the fun—there’s so much to see!
As many of you know, we’ve been extremely busy at The Mod House Project since moving in. We are tackling room after room to ultimately finish our main floor (and eventually the entire house).
We joined the ORC with the primary goal to update our combined living and dining room area. And that we did!
It all began with this very dated space. When we purchased our home last October, the set up had my husband ready to run out of the house. He couldn’t see past the old furniture, the ugly carpet, beige walls and off-centre light fixture.
I, on the other hand, saw potential!
It’s definitely come a long way. We totally transformed this combined living space to reflect both our style and needs. With new floors, some paint, a few added accessories and a DIY built-in, we are jumping with joy at the end result!
As mentioned in week 1, we did our major construction work prior to the ORC. This included:
- Knocking down part of the wall between our kitchen and dining room.
- Ripping out all the carpet and replacing with hardwood floors.
It was a lot of fun combining our old furniture pieces with some new ones in the room. The dining room table is an investment piece we purchased while living in our previous home, which I still adore to this day.
A graphic area rug was added to define the space, drapes to soften the look of the room and a fun modern brass chandelier to fill the air space above our table.
The living room is by far home to one of my favourite DIY’s: the built-in bookcases.
This is one of the first sights upon entering our home. This once overlooked empty room certainly gets all the attention now.
I originally purchase a secondhand buffet server for this space which didn’t work out as planned. It was substituted last minute for this open side table.
As always it’s been a pleasure joining the ORC journey. Thank you so much for following along.
Now let’s go check out all the other fabulous participants!

It’s beautiful Sabrina! Your built-ins turned out so well and that dining light fixture – so impressive! Really, everything turned out just great. 🙂
Thank you Brit! We didn’t know what to expect with the built-in being our first time creating them but ended up being super happy with the results!
Amazing, amazing, amazing!!!!!!!!!!! I love the details you’ve thought about and how the side table in the living room perfectly nods to the dining room table without being obviously part of a set. You really accomplished SO much in 6 weeks!
Thanks so much Thalita! You’re the best 🙂 I really had a freak attack about not being able to use our buffet server but in the end, the side table was the better choice!
Sabrina! It looks amazing. You got a lot done, I bet it feels amazing!
It sure feels great to look at another finished space! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
I love the light fixture in the dining room! And those built ins!

Thanks so much Sylvie! They turned out better than I can imagine!
What an amazing transformation! A true job well done. I adore the color palette you selected. It feels fresh and lovely. The six weeks went by so fast. I completed our entry, living and dining areas in a new to us 30 year old house. So, cheers to us! Have a wonderful weekend.
Your space is just simply amazing! The six weeks definitely went too fast! Thanks so much for the kind comments:)

Wow! You never fail to impress on reveal day! What a beautiful cozy space. I just love your built in. Looks like the perfect spot to curl up on a sunny day to read a book. Fantastic job!
That means a lot coming from you Tash! We are so pleased everything worked out in the end. The built-ins are definitely a favourite of ours.
I love, love, love everything about your new space! That light fixture is to die for, and the colors are just gorgeous. Beautiful job!!!
Thanks so much Natasha! The chandelier is a work of art! I almost feel the need to add more fancy light fixtures to the house now 🙂
ABSOLUTLY stunning! looks magazine worthy! great details and furnishings
Wow thanks Virginia! That means a lot to me 🙂
Sabrina, what a stunning transformation! I mean y’all had your work cut out for only 6 weeks! You’re combined new space looks like it came straight from a magazine but with your style! All the things you did like ripping out the beige carpet, painting the walls grey, taking out a wall, are things I’ve wanted to do since day one living in our home, now going on 2 years. 🙂 Hard to have a favorite when you’re new build in shelves, those blue sleek chairs, and your eating space! Cheers on a job well done and space you can finally enjoy! XOXO, Sarah
Many thanks Sarah! The ORC is always a challenge but I’m sure many will agree…. so rewarding in the end! Maybe you can tackle those things in the next round ;p You’ve got a great eye for design and I’m sure it will be nothing but a spectacular transformation!
Beautiful! I love the wall color and the transformation is astounding. You really made the biggest difference and it is now spectacular. Congratulations!! The styling is perfection. Oh and I really love the rug.
Wow! Girl, you killed it! Love your style.
What a stunning transformation, Sabrina! Everything is beautiful, but if forced to pick favorites, it would be a toss up between the bookcases and the chandelier. Well done!
you are sooooo impressive! i like devour your pics as if reading “real simple”!! seriously, have you ever considered enlarging your borders to television? you guys are too amazing!!!
You are too kind Pam! I think television would reveal the fact that my husband and I act like two giant kids remodelling a home. Most certainly entertaining for everyone else but too scary for me! lol I have thought about adding video to my blog though….perhaps you may see something in the near future! Thanks so much for the encouragement!
Amaaazing job! I am so in love with those built-ins! 😀
You’ve done an AMAZING job Sabrina! The spaces are completely transformed and so much more suited to a young, hip couple like yourselves 🙂 The built-ins are my favourite. The decor is cohesive, stylish and welcoming. Congratulations!
Thanks so much Jen! It such a huge change for us and we’re excited that we can actually start using the space now 🙂
Love the warm wood against the grays and blacks. Looks super fresh and cozy!
Thank you Kourtney!! I’m so pleased with how the traditional wood tones mixed so well with the modern colour scheme.
Wow–just WOW. This doesn’t even look like the same space. Every choice you made is so chic but also really value-adding for your home. Amazing work!
Thanks Brittany! It’s so important to think about resale when designing (unless, of course, you never plan to move again). You don’t want to add any permanent fixtures that will make another buyer cringe. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
It looks great! Kudos to you and your vision. It’s a really soft comfortable space. I love the small colourful details like the map and the vases.
LOVE this! Love the table, love the colors, love the bookcases, love the light fixture, love the styling!!! This is absolutely stunning!!!!!!
Wow, the transformation is so amazing! The space feels so much more fresh and open! I love the chandelier in the dining room… Fantastic job!
Those built-in shelves are perfect! Such a lovely view when you first walk in your house. Both rooms look amazing, I’m really impressed!
did you just tear out the wall or did you have to make sure it wasn’t a load bearing wall first from a pro? I think its amazing how those built in bookshelves made the room and window just pop out
Hi Sabina! We knew for sure that it wasn’t a load bearing wall. Our basement is unfinished which makes it easy for us to recognize where the beams are placed plus we have some handymen in the family that we turn to for advice! We would never ever touch a wall without knowing for sure:) Thanks so much for the kind comments:)
I.AM.SPEACHLESS. This is an over-the-top transformation.! Well done. The best part is that it looks like the home was built this way. I love the styling, too.
Thanks so much Linda! That means a lot to me! Not only does the ORC motivate us to keep going with remodelling our home but I love all the great people I discover from it! Thanks for being a great host as always 🙂
Sabrina….I love your style! You did a great job pulling these spaces together. They are clean and well edited. Love the color choices and I like that you mixed the modern and vintage together. Perfect!
Thank you Sherry! I’m all over the place with design so naturally I love mixing different styles. Just glad it all worked out in the end 🙂
Wow, you did a fantastic job! Opening the wall up to the kitchen was a great idea!
Thanks Taylor! Opening the wall made all the different on our main floor! It just makes everything seem bigger especially our small kitchen (which I can’t wait to share)
Holy smokes you did so much and killed it! Fabulous transformations, such sophisticated spaces – modern but still so welcoming! Well done!!
I just love this transformation! Very beautiful
This room is just perfect! I knew it would be, but man, the change is just phenomenal! Fabulous job!
Woooahh, that is an amazing transformation. I love every detail you added but the bookcases are just the best.

You have created absolutely stunning rooms! Love the choices and colours. A great eye for the finer details too. Congratulations Sabrina!
What an amazing transformation. Ho-hum rooms to pow! And the flow into the kitchen is super…love this ===great job
question, i noticed you put in a threshold between the two rooms…is there a reason why you didn’t line up the floors form one room into another? or is it he picture making it look wonky?
Thank you much for sharing. It gives me an idea!
