Family Room gets a Cozy Makeover: Before & After

By Sabrina @pinklilnotebook · On November 12, 2015

Since starting this blog, I don’t think I’ve ever created a room reveal so quickly. Talk about pushing ourselves to the limit!

Living with an empty family room for the past year, this project was more about furnishing our awkward space, fixing our dated fireplace and creating a comfortable living environment for our family.

With an open floor plan to the kitchen, this family room is definitely the hang out space for TV watching, socializing and relaxing. Creating a functional yet stylish space was important to us.

To get our desired look, I went for a muted colour palette with lots of added layers and textures. Using touches of wood tones and metallic accents also contributed to the added warmth of the room.

However, it didn’t always look this way; we originally started with beige walls, orange tone laminate floors and a hideous looking fireplace.  To catch a full glimpse, just take a look at the MLS image of the home.

The progress shots below also show the work we’ve done since moving in. The flooring was replaced with hardwood, we warmed up the walls with a grey tone and we even added pot lights.  That’s as far as we made it in phase one of our reno last year.

Fast forward to present, we recently removed the popcorn ceilings, completely transformed our corner fireplace and bought new furniture.  Due to our quick turnaround, there’s still a few missing pieces that I envisioned for this space but had trouble finding.  With time, I hope to build it all up.

As for our bigger finds, we’ve finally saved enough pennies to get our super deep sofa that we’ve been eyeing for 5 years. With a depth of 46″, all I can say is I’m never replacing my sofa ever again!  Not only is it super comfortable but the depth works perfectly for this long narrow family room.

The massive 8.5 x 11 foot rug is key to unifying this space. Being able to place the furniture on the area rug actually makes the room appear larger.  The subtle classic diamond pattern adds another layer of texture and warmth to the room.

The TV console is one of my favourite DIY’s. It’s actually an IKEA hack using SEKTION top fridge cabinet and some fancy hardware. I do hope to post a tutorial soon.

I feel like we made some major progress these last couple of weeks! Although there will be little things that I’d like to switch or add in the room, for now it does feel great to have it mostly figured out!

What a beautiful makeover!!! We are looking at buying a Napoleon fireplace and want it to heat about 700 sq. ft. Does yours put out plenty of heat or is it more for ambiance? What size room is it heating? Thanks!
